Guest Blogger Guidelines

CONTENT:
-Must be based upon original research or synthesis of well-researched secondary works.
-Should relate to Indiana history and describe the topic’s local, state, national and/or international significance.
-Previously published content can be submitted if permission is obtained.
-Ideal word count is 800-1600, but longer submissions may be broken into multiple parts.

IMAGES:
Guest bloggers must secure permission from image copyright holders (many non-profits allow the use of content for non-commercial educational purposes, including the Indiana Historical Society Digital Image Collections and Indiana Memory).
-Should help illustrate the text; it is ideal to use historic images of the person, place, or event if they exist. In cases where such images are unavailable, representative images may be used (such as relevant historic photos, non-contemporary artwork depicting subjects, photos of associated artifacts, historical markers, statuary, or buildings)
-Captions and photo credits should be included with images.
-Please email images in JPEG, TIFF, or PNG formats.

HYPERLINKING:
Untold Indiana links words and phrases to make it easy for interested readers to access more information.
-When possible, please link to one of IHB’s 500+ marker pages.
-We encourage linking to digitized primary sources.
-Links to websites with secondary source content should be vetted or written by an authority on the subject, such as the National Archives or Fort Wayne History Center. Websites ending in .gov or .edu are preferred (no links to Wikipedia please!).

TONE:
IHB tries to employ an accessible and informative tone and use the active voice (Passive voice typically includes the word “by,” or a form of “was” combined with another verb (e.g. “was elected” or “were made”).

CITATION:
-A short list of sources used or further reading should be included.
-Incorporate sources into the text when possible (ex: The Indianapolis Times reported on August 14, 1916…).
-For questions about how to properly credit sources, see plagiarism.org.

EDITING:
All posts will be edited for clarity, grammar, and tone. If requested, the revised post may be reviewed by the author prior to posting

Please provide a short bio, which will appear at the bottom of the post.
